DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

An eye doctor examining an elderly man's eye with an ophthalmoscope

Diabetic retinopathy causes problems with your retina, the part of your eye responsible for transferring visual information to your brain for processing. Diabetic retinopathy can cause blood vessels in the retina to leak fluid or bleed, resulting in distorted vision.

Symptoms

  • Spots or dark strings floating in your vision (floaters)
  • Blurred vision.
  • Fluctuating vision.
  • Dark or empty areas in your vision.
  • Vision loss.

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them through the optic nerve from the eye to the brain for processing. The macula, or the center of the retina, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye and controls our ability to see and process information.

CATARACTS

Close-up of an eye with a visible cataract

Cataracts cause a clouding of the lens in the eye, making your vision appear to be foggy. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and are the leading cause of blindness in the world.

GLAUCOMA

COMPUTER VISION

Computer Vision is a relatively new term within the optometry field and refers to eye problems associated with the prolonged use of computers and electronics that utilize a digital screen. Although it can be temporary, there are times when computer vision can strain the eyes to a degree that permanently affects your vision as well.

DIABETIC EYE CARE

Close-up of an eye

While it’s true that the primary symptom of diabetes is high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), it can lead to many other problems throughout the body, including wreaking havoc on your eyes. Some of the most common eye conditions caused by hyperglycemia are cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when the tiny blood vessels in your eyes become damaged by the high blood sugar levels over time.

DMV EYE EXAM

Woman wearing glasses, smiling while sitting in a car

The DMV eye test for New York drivers is a mandatory vision test to determine your visual acuity, which affects your ability to see from different lengths or in different lighting conditions, discern subtle movements, distinguish between colors and lights, and more.

How It Works:

  • The vision testing takes only a few minutes
  • We need information off your current license so be sure to bring it along.
  • If you cannot pass the visual acuity test that NY State requires, you can schedule an appointment with the optometrist to get a prescription and eyeglasses or contact lenses

We are enrolled in the DMV Online Vision Registry, which means we can submit your results electronically so that you don’t have to bring or mail files to the DMV.
